You’re invited! My Palindrome pattern has been published in the Knitty.com First Fall 2025 issue, and we’re going to celebrate!
Come see the socks in person, have some cake, and learn more about their unusual features. We’ve got a toe-to-toe construction AND a new sock heel to knit, and I’ll be talking about how the heel works and fits. You’ll also get a preview of the variations I’ve been working on which I’ll be publishing over the coming months.
For knitters in the Ottawa area, you can also sign up for a 4-week class to knit this pair of socks with me. We’ll be covering a range of topics together, and at the end of four weeks, you could have a completed pair (or two) of socks:
toe-up sock construction, including Judy’s Magic Cast On
the new aknitica heel construction — how to make it, how to modify it, and how to use it in other sock patterns or design socks with it
custom sock fitting
grafting and my favourite mnemonic trick that makes it easier for me
picking up and knitting, binding off, and separating the sock pair
Here’s the link to sign up at Maker Savvy for the afternoon class.
And here’s the link for the evening class at Maker Savvy.
The class tickets definitely apply to a 4-week class each. (I just spotted an error when linking them that makes them appear to be for one two-hour session. We’ll fix the listing, but in the meantime, don’t let it throw you off.)
I hope to see you at the party this week, so we can eat cake and have a great time geeking out about sock knitting. :)
Here’s a link to the free pattern on Knitty for you.
I love that I got to work with Knitty to bring you this particular pattern for a couple of reasons:
Knitty is a Canadian, online, long-running magazine that offers all its patterns for free. And because of its patrons and advertisers, Knitty pays its designers. So you get my pattern to knit for free, and I can continue to make a living.
These sock heels are quite possibly a new innovation (at least, I’ve never come across a construction quite like this, and I’ve made it my mission to knit as many sock heels as I can find), and I believe innovation and invention are meant to be shared to benefit the community. Knitting has always been an open-source craft, and I’ve benefitted immensely from the ideas of all the knitters who’ve come before me. I hope you’ll find these heels to be a useful and interesting addition to your sock-knitting toolkit.
Having said that, I also hope you’ll be intrigued enough to purchase my future sock patterns so I can continue to write them. :)
Finally, let’s talk about that gorgeous yarn! I knit this pair using Kat’s Riverside Studio Untreated Soft Sock in the colour Beryl, and it was a velvety delight. The stitch definition was so lovely, a feature which surprised me with such a soft-to-the-touch yarn.
The heel also looks fantastic when knit with self-striping yarn. We get a diagonal stripe effect which I’ve never seen on a heel before. Here it is knit in blue-and-grey-striped Regia 4-Ply Color:
Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you at the party and/or class!
